„Sorry mate, but I really can’t help you. Everyone wants to leave this planet, if I started to take passengers I would soon get overrun, not to mention the trouble I would get if the Authorities found out.”
Jack stifled a sigh and shook the woman’s hand. He had been trying to hitch a ride for the last five weeks, going from ship to ship every day, using his charms, offering his workforce, doing everything to get a place on one of the cargo ships. But he was always met with the same answers. Can’t help you, the Authorities, too many people. Yadda bloody ya.
It had taken mere weeks for a basic earth government to be re-established and one of the first steps to restore the authority was a travel embargo, to stop the constant flow of fugitives – after all, a society needed citizens. Jack had tried to read the travel regulations at one of the improvised “Citizen Consulting Agencies”, but he had given up after 10 pages of small printed legalese, cursing the human disposedness to bureaucracy. What he knew was that he had neither the friends in high places, nor the money that he needed to leave the planet “legally”. And so he had counted on his wits and skills to get away from earth. But he had underestimated the pressure that the government was exerting on the traders and carriers, raiding ships each day in search for illegal emigrants.
At noon, Jack had retreated into the shadow of one of the barracks, escaping the gleaming sun for a few minutes to watch the going-ons of the impromptu space harbour, looking out for new arrivals.
“You look like you are searching for something.”
Jack turned around, answering without thinking much about it. “Everyone here is.”
The first thing that came to his mind as he eyed the stranger was Pirate. Tall, 40-ish, his curly black hair - showing first silvery streaks – bound back into a ponytail. He wasn’t bad looking, but there was a hint of coldness in the intelligent brown eyes that made Jack cautious.
“Clearly”, the man answered, before stretching out his hand. “Captain Paris Hughes, nice to meet you…?”
“Name’s Jack Harkness.” He shook the stranger’s hand. He had a firm grasp, but surprisingly cold hands for the hot weather. He smiled at Jack, but his eyes stayed cold and Jack already felt uneasy in his presence. Just stay cool Harkness, he’s not the only one who can smile.
“And what gives me the honour, Captain Hughes?” He couldn’t resist putting an ironic emphasis on the title, but the man took it in his stride. “Mr Harkness, I would like to offer you a deal. But I’d really prefer to do so over a cool drink at a less noisy place. Whisky’s on me, even if you don’t like what you hear.”
The stranger didn’t exactly inspire his confidence, but Jack knew that it was pointless to decline this invitation. It surely wouldn’t hurt to listen to him.
“Alright”, he answered. “But don’t even think about slipping something into my drink.”
