So Doctor Who got 6.5 million viewers last night... and we have the usual quota of 'goldfish' proclaiming that the roof of the world is falling.
It isn't. There's no disastrous switch off, there's no obvious poor reaction. What there is, believe it or not, is a simple refection of the same basic overnight pattern as for series three and series four.
Look at it:
8.2 - 6.8 - 8.0 - 6.3 - Series Three
8.4 - 8.1 - 6.9 - 6.4 - Series Four
8.0 - 6.7 - 6.4 - ?.? - Series Five
Note that 'Gridlock' in series three got a huge boost in overnights from the football. It doesn't take much to figure that without that we'd most likely have seen an overnight of c. 6.6 or 6.5 million
Yes 'The Fires of Pompeii', in series four, bucked the trend slightly (or at least delayed the 'decline' by a week), but the basic pattern is clearly there, and you'd have to be a world class spinmeister to argue that the overnight ratings for series five aren't essentially just, well, normal for the show.
If it helps - let's remove the 'blips' from series three and four and see the series trend more clearly:
8.2 - 6.8 - 6.3 - Series Three
8.4 - 6.9 - 6.4 - Series Four
8.0 - 6.7 - 6.5 - Series Five
What appears to be different this year (and I say 'appears' because we only have limited data so far, to say the least) is that the timeshifting - both standard and via iPlayer - are higher than ever. Which sugggests increased overall interest, but seemingly isn't going to drag more people to their TVs to watch live. Which is the reality of our TV age, for all that some try to pretend otherwise.
